Coming Soon!!! A Promise From Jesus!!!

373905_f520a.jpg“Surely I am coming quickly.” —Revelation 22:20

A “COMING SOON!” announcement often precedes future events in entertainment and sports, or the launch of the latest technology. The goal is to create anticipation and excitement for what is going to happen, even though it may be months away.

While reading the book of Revelation, I was impressed with the “coming soon” sense of immediacy permeating the entire book. Rather than saying, “Someday, in the far distant future, Jesus Christ is going to return to earth,” the text is filled with phrases like “things which must shortly take place” (1:1) and “the time is near” (v.3). Three times in the final chapter, the Lord says, “I am coming quickly” (Rev. 22:7,12,20). Other versions translate this phrase as, “I’m coming soon,” “I’m coming speedily,” and “I’m on My way!”

How can this be—since 2,000 years have elapsed since these words were written? “Quickly” doesn’t seem appropriate for our experience of time.

Rather than focusing on a date for His return, the Lord is urging us to set our hearts on His promise that will be fulfilled. We are called to live for Him in this present age “looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13).

Live as if Christ is coming back today.

Insight

As with today’s text, 2 Peter 3:1-10 deals with Jesus’ imminent return. Peter explains that “the Lord is not slack concerning His promise . . . but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (v.9).

Still Working and Still Together!!!

article-0-1B78D4E1000005DCa-134_634x410.jpg

Vivian and Don are in their mid-90s and have been married more than 70 years. Recently Vivian suffered a setback when she broke her hip. This has been additionally difficult because for several years both Don and Vivian have been saddened by the realization that they are no longer strong enough to be active in the life and work of their church.

However, Vivian and Don are still hard at work for the Lord: They are prayer warriors. While they may not always be physically present and visible in the life of their church, they are faithful “behind the scenes” in their service for Him.

The parable of the talents in Matthew 25 reminds us that we must use the “talentsGod has given us wisely. All of us have God-given skills and abilities at various levels—and we must not bury, unused, what God has given us.

It is not only in our years of strength that God will use us, but also in our youth and age, as well as in our sickness and weakness. Vivian and Don continue to serve by praying. And like them, we honor our Savior by using our skills—“each according to his own ability” (v.15) to serve Him who is worthy.

Lord, You have done so much for me. Please show
me what I can do to serve You—to honor You with
the abilities You have provided. May my life be a
living sacrifice of love and action for Your honor.

God can use you at any age—if you are willing.

Insight

The parable of the talents contains a profound and enduring message to the believer. It drives home the point that we will be justly compensated for the use of our Spirit-filled talents. Both motive and faithfulness will be key factors in how we are evaluated at the judgment (Bema) seat of Christ (2 Cor. 5:10). “Good works” performed in the energy of the flesh or for the wrong motives will be burned up. But faithful, Spirit-filled service will be rewarded (1 Cor. 3:12-15).

I saw this on facebook and I just had to share it!!!

girlplayingintherain.jpgSaw this on Facebook and thought it has a great message…worth the read and definitely the share!

A little girl had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful red haired, freckle faced image of innocence.

It was pouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the earth it has no time to flow down the spout.. We all stood there, under the awning, just inside the door of the Wal-Mart.
We waited, some patiently, others irritated because nature messed up their hurried day.

I am always mesmerized by rainfall. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child came pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day.

Her little voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance we were all caught in, ‘Mom let’s run through the rain,’
She said.
‘What?’ Mom asked.

‘Let’s run through the rain!’ She repeated.

‘No, honey. We’ll wait until it slows down a bit,’ Mom replied.

This young child waited a minute and repeated: ‘Mom, let’s run through the rain..’

‘We’ll get soaked if we do,’ Mom said.

‘No, we won’t, Mom. That’s not what you said this morning,’ the young girl said as she tugged at her Mom’s arm.

‘This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?’

‘Don’t you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, ‘ If God can get us through this, He can get us through anything! ‘ ‘

The entire crowd stopped dead silent.. I swear you couldn’t hear anything but the rain.. We all stood silently. No one left. Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.

Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child’s life. A time when innocent trust can be nurtured so that it will bloom into faith.

‘Honey, you are absolutely right. Let’s run through the rain. If GOD let’s us get wet, well maybe we just need washing,’ Mom said.

Then off they ran. We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they darted past the cars and yes, through the puddles. They got soaked.

They were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet. I needed washing.

Circumstances or people can take away your material possessions, they can take away your money, and they can take away your health. But no one can ever take away your precious memories…So, don’t forget to make time and take the opportunities to make memories every day.

I HOPE YOU STILL TAKE THE TIME TO RUN THROUGH THE RAIN.

If you’ve read this all and it’s touched you… share it.

How long did it take before the first tears rolls down your cheek???

Will I Bring Myself Up to This Level???

. . . perfecting holiness in the fear of God —2 Corinthians 7:1

1-corinthians-13-4-7-11a.jpg

Therefore, having these promises. . . .” I claim God’s promises for my life and look to their fulfillment, and rightly so, but that shows only the human perspective on them. God’s perspective is that through His promises I will come to recognize His claim of ownership on me. For example, do I realize that my “body is the temple of the Holy Spirit,” or am I condoning some habit in my body which clearly could not withstand the light of God on it? (1 Corinthians 6:19). God formed His Son in me through sanctification, setting me apart from sin and making me holy in His sight (see Galatians 4:19). But I must begin to transform my natural life into spiritual life by obedience to Him. God instructs us even in the smallest details of life. And when He brings you conviction of sin, do not “confer with flesh and blood,” but cleanse yourself from it at once (Galatians 1:16). Keep yourself cleansed in your daily walk.

I must cleanse myself from all filthiness in my flesh and my spirit until both are in harmony with the nature of God. Is the mind of my spirit in perfect agreement with the life of the Son of God in me, or am I mentally rebellious and defiant? Am I allowing the mind of Christ to be formed in me? (see Philippians 2:5). Christ never spoke of His right to Himself, but always maintained an inner vigilance to submit His spirit continually to His Father. I also have the responsibility to keep my spirit in agreement with His Spirit. And when I do, Jesus gradually lifts me up to the level where He lived-a level of perfect submission to His Father’s will— where I pay no attention to anything else. Am I perfecting this kind of holiness in the fear of God? Is God having His way with me, and are people beginning to see God in my life more and more?

Be serious in your commitment to God and gladly leave everything else alone. Literally put God first in your life.

The Mystery of Malaysian Airlines 370!!!

thediplomat_2014-03-10_16-52-58-386x257a.jpg

At any moment we may hear the answer. But for now the mysterious disappearance of the 239 passengers and crew of the missing 777 has captured the minds and hearts of the world.

For many of us, the developing story raises disturbing questions of personal risk and security, procedural errors, truth and misinformation in reporting, corporate cover-up, and implied assumptions of responsibility, blame, and guilt.

For others, there is only one real issue. For family and friends of the 239, this is far more personal than words could express. Consumed and overwhelmed by their love, they might cry out in anger, frustration, or fear, or retreat to their homes to worry and grieve in silence. But at this point, they are not so much concerned about solving the mystery, weighing in on a theory, or blaming anyone— as they are in keeping hope alive for someone they love.

Where does such love come from? Could anyone care more for us—or for those we love, than the One who now invites us into the mysteries of our own lives, to share even the smallest hint of his own mind— and heart?

The Discipline of Dismay!!!

mark10_jesus_serving_on_the_way_to_the_cross_slidera.jpgAt the beginning of our life with Jesus Christ, we were sure we knew all there was to know about following Him… It was a delight to forsake everything else and to throw ourselves before Him in a fearless statement of love… But now we are not quite so sure… Jesus is far ahead of us and is beginning to seem different and unfamiliar…

There is an aspect of Jesus that chills even a disciple’s heart to its depth and makes his entire spiritual life gasp for air… This unusual Person with His face set “like a flint” (Isaiah 50:7) is walking with great determination ahead of me, and He strikes terror right through me… He no longer seems to be my Counselor and Friend and has a point of view about which I know nothing… All I can do is stand and stare at Him in amazement… At first I was confident that I understood Him, but now I am not so sure. I begin to realize that there is a distance between Jesus and me and I can no longer be intimate with Him… I have no idea where He is going, and the goal has become strangely distant…

Jesus Christ had to understand fully every sin and sorrow that human beings could experience, and that is what makes Him seem unfamiliar… When we see this aspect of Him, we realize we really don’t know Him… We don’t recognize even one characteristic of His life, and we don’t know how to begin to follow HimHe is far ahead of us, a Leader who seems totally unfamiliar, and we have no friendship with Him

The discipline of dismay is an essential lesson which a disciple must learn… The danger is that we tend to look back on our times of obedience and on our past sacrifices to God in an effort to keep our enthusiasm for Him strong (see Isaiah 50:10-11)… But when the darkness of dismay comes, endure until it is over, because out of it will come the ability to follow Jesus truly, which brings inexpressibly wonderful joy…

Do Not Concern Yourself With Titles!!!

prayer_5_resizeda.jpgWhen the British Broadcasting Corporation asked for examples of important-sounding, obscure, and even bizarre job titles, one writer offered hers: Underwater Ceramic Technician… She was a dishwasher at a restaurant. Sometimes titles are used to make a job sound more important…

When the apostle Paul listed some of God’s gifts to the church in Ephesians 4:11, he did not intend for these to be understood as high-sounding job titles… All the parts of the body are necessary for the body to function properly. No one part is better than another…

What was of primary importance was the purpose of these gifts… They were “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to . . . the stature of the fullness of Christ” (vv.12-13).

It matters little what title we hold… What is important is that we strengthen the faith of God’s people. When we gauge our effectiveness by the standard that the Bible gives us, it will not matter when we are moved to another role or no longer hold a specific title… Out of love for God, we serve to build up fellow believers, and we let God give His commendation in heaven as He sees fit (Matt. 25:21)…

Lord, please use me as Your instrument to touch
others’ lives… Help me not to be concerned
about what title I hold but instead that my
life might show others Your grace…

God’s gifts to us are not for us but for others…

Insight!!!

Today’s reading records Christ giving spiritual gifts to the church, the body of Christ… These gifts include: apostles, those who open up new mission territories to the gospel; prophets, who apply the Word in spiritually compelling ways; evangelists, who have a special ability to share the gospel that often brings a positive response; and pastors/teachers, who communicate the Word so that believers are built up in their faith… The goal of the use of these gifts is that Christians will be “perfected” in their faith and move on to maturity. The effective use of gifts creates a unity that bears witness to the reality of Christ (John 13:35)…

God’s Total Surrender to Us!!!

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotton Son . . . —John 3:16

jesus-on-the-crossa.jpg

Salvation does not mean merely deliverance from sin or the experience of personal holiness… The salvation which comes from God means being completely delivered from myself, and being placed into perfect union with Him… When I think of my salvation experience, I think of being delivered from sin and gaining personal holiness… But salvation is so much more! It means that the Spirit of God has brought me into intimate contact with the true Person of God Himself… And as I am caught up into total surrender to God, I become thrilled with something infinitely greater than myself…

To say that we are called to preach holiness or sanctification is to miss the main point… We are called to proclaim Jesus Christ (see )… The fact that He saves from sin and makes us holy is actually part of the effect of His wonderful and total surrender to us…

If we are truly surrendered, we will never be aware of our own efforts to remain surrendered… Our entire life will be consumed with the One to whom we surrender. Beware of talking about surrender if you know nothing about it… In fact, you will never know anything about it until you understand that John 3:16 means that God completely and absolutely gave Himself to us… In our surrender, we must give ourselves to God in the same way He gave Himself for us— totally, unconditionally, and without reservation… The consequences and circumstances resulting from our surrender will never even enter our mind, because our life will be totally consumed with Him

When Circumstances Wear You Down

ComeUntoMea.jpg

Where Do You Turn?

March 12, 2014

We are now in the NFL’s equivalent of NASCAR’s silly season, and players are moving from team to team so quickly that it seems impossible to keep up… Some of this is because a certain number of players are highly sought after—but usually it is because the team is wanting to dump some salary, or because they are preparing to replace a player with a younger, cheaper model in the upcoming draft…  Though the superstars in the NFL make millions, however, many players are just happy to have a job—and that is a sentiment easily understood in our current difficult times when life feels very fragile…

Losing your job is losing your job—whether that job is on the gridiron, in an iron manufacturing facility, or ironing clothes in a laundry… The sense of loss and the attack on your self-worth, not to mention the humiliation that a person feels when they are let go from their work, can create a fear that borders on panic, raising an important question: Where do you turn in times like these???

Jesus spoke to people who were living in difficult times as well, and when He did, he offered Himself as the answer to desperation’s question… He said:

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest…” (Matthew 11:28)

He doesn’t offer easy answers to tough questions, nor does He try to say that our concerns are smaller than they are… He simply offers Himself as the solution to the greatest needs we have. We can turn to Him when we don’t know where to turn. Our God reaffirms the words of His Son when He declares in His Word that, when you are hurting, your best response can be:

“…casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you…” (1 Peter 5:7).

And that is the good, great, and wonderful news for the hurting heart—the God of the universe cares for you!!!

Rainbows and Remembering!!!

1024px-Double-alaskan-rainbowa.jpg

The sight of a rainbow can trigger many thoughts. Spotting one might conjure up fairy tales of leprechauns and pots teeming with gold.

In real life, however, rainbows do point to important things. For instance, mariners have long known that rainbows can be used to predict the weather. Generally speaking, weather moves from west to east, thus the old saying, “Rainbow in the morning, sailors take warning; rainbow at night, a sailor’s delight.”

Though a rainbow is typically as trustworthy as a local meteorologist’s forecast, predicting weather was not its original purpose. The rainbow was (and still is) a sign of God’s promise that He would never again use floodwaters to destroy all life on the earth (Genesis 9:12-17). And even though violent storms and heavy rains—even severe localized flooding—still occur, nothing like Noah experienced will take place now or in the future.

God said that when He would see a rainbow, He would remember His promise: “When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life” (Genesis 9:14-15).

Really? Could God actually forget His promise? No way! Our Creator is all-knowing. But, by way of example, He might have been teaching Noah (and the rest of His image-bearers) about the importance ofremembering.

The Bible is filled with stories that teach us certain things our Creator doesn’t want us ever to forget. So the next time you spot a rainbow, think of Noah, and then ask God if there’s something else He wants you to remember about Him and what He’s done.

Get Some Balance In Your Life!!!

Violence And Danger

sing.ways.tightrope_walkera.jpg

I don’t know about you, but for me, one of the things I love most about sports is that it creates a kind of release for the pressures of life. Whether playing golf with the guys, watching my favorite team play, or watching my favorite driver race, sports gives us a place to go where we can concentrate for a few minutes on stuff like field goal percentage or batting average or greens-in-regulation stats. It is fun and normally harmless, giving us distractions to help us process a world that is much too big for us.

Then, when we least expect it, the realities of life in a fallen world intersect with sport and disrupt what we had thought was a “safe zone.” In my lifetime, this most notably happened in the 1972 Munich Olympics, when terrorists captured Israeli athletes at games meant to express a desire for peace and brotherhood. Then, it happened again in Atlanta’s summer games of 1996, when bombs exploded in the Olympic Centennial Park. The result of that bombing was 2 dead and over 100 wounded, as games intended to promote peace, harmony, and understanding were used as a platform for violence.

These tragic events are not limited, of course to the world of sports, as the recent violence in the Ukraine grabbed the world’s attention, much like the Arab Spring of a couple of years ago. This world continues to remind us that we live in a dangerous place—and a place that cannot be fixed simply by a sporting event, or a summit, or a symposium. Our brokenness is beyond any remedies we ourselves might try to develop.

This is a reminder of the depth of the fallen nature of the world in which we live. It is a reminder that no one—regardless of how famous or popular or successful they may be—is immune from the dangers of living in a world so badly broken by sin. It is a reminder of how desperately this world needs the Savior who died because of that very brokenness, and the heartache and destruction that brokenness causes. And it is a reminder of why, for followers of Christ, there is such a deep heart longing for heaven.

In a world of brokenness and sin, we long for wholeness and ultimate cleansing. And, in a special way, we long for a day when

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4)

If we know the Savior, that hope can salve our hurting hearts in days filled with violence and danger.

A Guide Is Essential When You Are Lost!!!

jesusanswersprayers-8b.jpg

Make It Personal

By Dave Branon

During my days as a teacher and coach at a Christian high school, I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with teenagers, trying to guide them to a purposeful, Christ like life—characterized by love for God and love for others. My goal was to prepare them to live for God throughout life. That would happen only as they made their faith a vital part of life through the help of the Holy Spirit. Those who didn’t follow Christ floundered after they left the influence of Christian teachers and parents.

This is demonstrated in the story of King Joash of Judah and his uncle Jehoiada. Jehoiada, a wise counselor, influenced Joash to live a God-honoring life (2 Chron. 24:11,14).

The problem was that Joash did not embrace an honorable life as his own. After Jehoiada died, King Joash “left the house of the LORD” (v.18) and began to worship in a pagan way. He turned and became so evil that he had Jehoiada’s son murdered (vv.20–22).

Having someone in our lives to guide us toward faith and Christlikeness can be good and helpful. Even better is getting to know the Lord ourselves and learning to rely on the Holy Spirit to be our guide (Gal. 5:16). That is making our faith personal.

Lord, thank You for the people in my life who
influence me toward following You. Help
me not to depend on them primarily—but to
depend on Your Holy Spirit to guide me.

The faith of others encourages; a faith of our own transforms.

Insight

Joash was the youngest king to reign in Jerusalem. Because he was 7 years old when his reign began, he was in special need of guidance. In the New Testament, Paul highlights the importance of mentors when he says, “Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ” (1 Cor. 11:1).

Dressed To Deceive!!!

WolfInSheepsClothinga.jpg

Beware Of False Prophets!!!

Hiking in the mountains of Utah, Coty Creighton spotted a goat that didn’t look like the rest of the herd. A closer look revealed that the unusual animal was actually a man dressed as a goat. When authorities contacted the man, he described his costume as a painter’s suit covered in fleece, and he said he was testing his disguise for a hunting trip.

The hunter’s deception reminds me of Jesus’ words: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves” (Matt. 7:15). False teachers do not bear the fruit of God’s Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23). Rather, they “walk according to the flesh . . . and despise authority” (2 Peter 2:10). They are bold, egotistical, and given to greed (vv.10,14). Ruled by their own desires, they exploit people by using “deceptive words” (v.3). The Bible says these wayward spiritual leaders are headed for destruction and will take many unsuspecting and undiscerning people with them (vv.1-2).

Jesus, the Good Shepherd, rather than pursuing personal gain, laid down His life for His sheep. God does not want anyone to be misled by false teaching. He wants us to be aware of those who deceive, and follow Him instead—the true Shepherd of our souls.

At the name of Jesus
Every knee shall bow,
Every tongue confess Him,
King of glory now. —Noel

Substitutes abound, but there is only one Christ.

Coaching And Mentoring!!!

Mentoring_-_Coachinga.jpgAnyone who coaches youth sports, whether it is little league baseball, rocket football, soccer, or a myriad of other activities for kids, is a mentor. Professional athletes sometimes debate whether they are, or should be, role models for young people to look up to—but no such debate exists in the world of youth sports. If you are a coach, you are a role model. Everything you do in working with that team or young person, and everything you model while doing it, is an example that impacts the lives of the young people you coach. It is a significant responsibility that surpasses sports and definitively speaks of life and how it is supposed to be lived. A significant responsibility indeed.

In the Bible, the apostle Paul also modeled a serious commitment to mentoring. He was continually investing himself in young servants of Christ who he wanted to prepare and equip for life, and for spiritual service, that would be effective long after he had left this life. But, it was not just a matter of teaching and instruction (coaching), it was also a matter of how he chose to live. To that end, he wrote to a young trainee in ministry named Timothy, “The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2). Not only did he want Timothy to embrace that example, he wanted him to then train and mentor others as well.

In a sense, this adds a new dimension to the biblical picture of the Christian life. Several times in his writings, Paul uses the metaphor of running a race to picture the Christian life—but now he tells us more. He tells us it isn’t a sprint or a distance run—it is a relay race. As he had made the hand-off to Timothy, he wanted Timothy to pass the baton of faithful living to those who would follow him. And so on. And so on.

So, who can you pass the baton of serving Christ to? You can start the process of mentoring today just by caring enough to take an interest and get involved in someone else’s life.

Taking the Next Step . . .

Jesus-washing-feet-02a.jpg

in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses —2 Corinthians 6:4

When you have no vision from God, no enthusiasm left in your life, and no one watching and encouraging you, it requires the grace of Almighty God to take the next step in your devotion to Him, in the reading and studying of His Word, in your family life, or in your duty to Him. It takes much more of the grace of God, and a much greater awareness of drawing upon Him, to take that next step, than it does to preach the gospel.

Every Christian must experience the essence of the incarnation by bringing the next step down into flesh-and-blood reality and by working it out with his hands. We lose interest and give up when we have no vision, no encouragement, and no improvement, but only experience our everyday life with its trivial tasks. The thing that really testifies for God and for the people of God in the long run is steady perseverance, even when the work cannot be seen by others. And the only way to live an undefeated life is to live looking to God. Ask God to keep the eyes of your spirit open to the risen Christ, and it will be impossible for drudgery to discourage you. Never allow yourself to think that some tasks are beneath your dignity or too insignificant for you to do, and remind yourself of the example of Christ inJohn 13:1-17.

2 Corinthians 6:4-10 King James Version (KJV)

4 But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,

5 In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings;

6 By pureness, by knowledge, by long suffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,

7 By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,

8 By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true;

9 As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed;

10 As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

Boo!!! A Little Scare Can Be Exhilarating!!! But The Big Scares Need Jesus!!!

jesusanswersprayers-8a.jpg

One of the early games that many parents play with their children involves a fake scare. Dad hides his face behind his hands and suddenly reveals himself while saying, “Boo!” The child giggles at this silliness.

Being frightened is a fun game until the day when the child experiences a real scare. Then it’s no laughing matter. The first real scare often involves separation from a parent. The child wanders away innocently, moving from one attraction to another. But as soon as she realizes she is lost, she panics and lets out a loud cry of alarm. The parent immediately comes running to reassure the child that she is not alone.

As we get older, our fake scares become sophisticated—scary books, movies, amusement park rides. Being scared is so invigorating that we may begin taking bigger risks for bigger thrills.

But when a real scare comes, we may realize that we, like the ancient Israelites (Isa. 30), have wandered from the One who loves and cares for us. Recognizing that we are in danger, we panic. Our call for help does not require sophisticated words or a well-reasoned defense, just a desperate cry.

Like a loving parent, God responds quickly for He longs to have us live in the protection of His love where we need never be afraid.

“Trusting God’s faithfulness helps dispel our fearfulness.”

Insight

In Isaiah’s prophecy in today’s text, we see the great heart of patience our God has toward us even in our worst moments (see 2 Peter 3:15). In verse 18, Isaiah says that the Lord waits “that He may be gracious” to those who fail. His exalted position is one from which He exercises mercy on our behalf. Isaiah issues the challenge that we also are to wait upon Him, for He alone can bring justice into our broken world.

Jesus Wants Our Labors To Be Shared!!!

koi_don_sophiea.jpg

A friend once spent a day installing large stone steps in his backyard. When his 5-year-old daughter begged to help, he suggested she just sing to encourage him in his work. She said no. She wanted to help. Carefully, when it would not endanger her, he let her place her hands on the rocks as he moved them.

He could have built the steps in less time without her. At the end of the day, though, he not only had new steps but also a daughter bursting with pride. “Me and Dad made steps,” she announced at dinner that night.

From the beginning, God has relied on people to advance His work. After equipping Adam to cultivate the land and supervise the animals, God left the work of the garden in his hands (Gen. 2:15-20).

The pattern has continued. When God wanted a dwelling place on earth, a tabernacle and temple did not descend from the sky; thousands of artists and craftsmen worked to fashion them (Ex. 35–38; 1 Kings 6). When Jesus proclaimed the new reign of God’s kingdom on earth, He invited human beings to help. He told His disciples, “Pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest” (Matt. 9:38).

As a father does with his children, so does God welcome us as His kingdom partners.

Heavenly Father, thank You that in Your love

and wisdom, You invite us to accomplish Your acts

of love, service, and kindness here on earth.

Thank You for the privilege of “helping” You.

God uses humble servants to accomplish His great work.

Insight

As we read in today’s text Jesus’ response to the multitudes, we see three distinct elements to that response. First of all, Jesus saw something. He saw the crowds of people “weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd” (Matt. 9:36). Additionally, He felt something because, as verse 36 tells us, He was “moved with compassion for them.” Finally, the Master did something by calling for laborers to join in the work with Him (v.38). Christ’s example gives us a powerful model for engaging people with the heart of Christ.

No More Prejudice!!!

Feed_my_sheep_1a.jpg

A 2010 survey by Newsweekcontained some startling statistics: 57 percent of hiring managers believe an unattractive (but qualified) job candidate would have a harder time getting hired; 84 percent of managers said their bosses would hesitate before hiring a qualified older candidate; 64 percent of hiring managers said they believe companies should be allowed to hire people based on appearance. All are clear examples of unacceptable prejudice.

Prejudice is not new. It had crept into the early church, and James confronted it head-on. With prophetic grit and a pastor’s heart, he wrote: “My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality” (James 2:1). James gave an example of this type of prejudice—favoring the rich and ignoring the poor (vv.2-4). This was inconsistent with holding faith in Jesus without partiality (v.1), betrayed the grace of God (vv.5-7), violated the law of love (v.8), and was sinful (v.9). The answer to partiality is following the example of Jesus: loving your neighbor as yourself.

We fight the sin of prejudice when we let God’s love for us find full expression in the way we love and treat each other.

Thinking It Over
Who helped you determine what is the right way to
treat people? Was it based on external things?
What are some ways you can love people as Jesus did?
Looking up to Jesus prevents us from looking down on others.

Insight

In James 2:8, we see a guiding principle of Scripture—our responsibility and privilege to love our neighbors as ourselves. This theme was established in the ancient law of Israel (Lev. 19:18) and was the life principle illustrated by Jesus in the parable of the good Samaritan (Luke 10:27). In addition to James’s words here, it is affirmed by Paul in Galatians 5:14.

Jesus’ Love For Us All Is Displayed Every Sunrise!!!

He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, . . . where they crucified Him. —John 19:17-18

sunrisea.jpg

It was a bit unusual, but three times in one day I heard the same song. In the early afternoon, I attended a hymnsing at a home for the elderly. As part of her prayer at the end of our time together, Willie, one of the residents, said, “Sing with me, ‘Jesus Loves Me.’” In the evening, I attended a gathering with young people who sang it while pounding out the beat with their hands and feet. Later that evening, I received a text message on my phone with an audio recording of my 2 1/2-year-old grandniece with a sweet little voice, singing, “I am weak, but He is strong.” People in their nineties, teenagers, and a toddler all sang that song that day.

After hearing that simple song three times, I began to think the Lord might be telling me something. Actually, He gave us all this message long ago: “I love you.” We read in John 19 that He allowed people to put a crown of thorns on His head, mock Him, strike Him, strip Him, and crucify Him (vv.1-6). He had the power to stop them, but He said very little (v.11). He did it all for love’s sake to pay for our sins and to rescue us from punishment.

How much does God love us? Jesus spread out His arms and was nailed to the cross. He died for us, then rose again. That’s a precious fact for young and old.

Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak but He is strong. —Warner

The truest measure of God’s love is that He loves without measure! —Bernard of Clairvaux

Insight

Although history is obscure about many details of Pontius Pilate’s life and death, we do know that he served as the prefect, or governor, of Judea for 10 years from ad 26 to 36. An artifact discovered in 1961 verifies his existence and underscores once again that the Bible can be trusted.

All Because of Jesus!!!

Jesus001a.jpg

Baseball is a team game, requiring the successful coordination of players with distinctive roles. Each of the 9 defensive positions on the field demands a particular skillset, which usually means that if you are good at one position, you will probably struggle at several others. On May 13, 2008, however, Florida State University baseball player Buster Posey (now with the San Francisco Giants and one of the finest catchers in the major leagues) did the seemingly impossible. Through the course of the game, he played all nine defensive positions in an extraordinary exhibition of individual talent. However, in spite of that achievement, Posey was not a one-man team. He still needed players in the other 8 positions for his Florida State team to win the game.

It has long been said that there is no “I” in team, because every part of the team contributes. In a big game, someone might hit the winning shot or drive in the winning run, but without the rest of the team, they couldn’t have been in the position to do that. In a team sport, you can’t say that it was all because of one player.

In life, however, we know that there are things that are utterly and completely all because of Christ—and here are several (though you may think of others):

Fulfilling the law on our behalf: We could never reach the standards or expectations of God’s laws, so Jesus did. “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” (Matthew 5:17-18).

Provide us salvation: We could never earn favor with God or deserve His grace, but Jesus “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

Equipping us for living: This is seen both in the positive and the negative-

• Positive: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Phil. 4:13)

• Negative: “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

Left to ourselves, we would be lost, alone, and without hope—but we have not been left to ourselves! Christ has come that we might have life and have it more abundantly, and it is all because of Him and what He has done. Relationship with God has been made available to us through His cross and His love… the most important things in life both now and forever are all because of Jesus.

Big Spring – The Water Of Life!!!

Christ-and-samaritan-womana.jpgThe water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life. —John 4:14

Bible in a Year:
Numbers 20-22; Mark 7:1-13

In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a remarkable natural wonder—a pool about 40 feet deep and 300 feet across that Native Americans called “Kitch-iti-kipi,” or “the big cold water.” Today it is known as The Big Spring. It is fed by underground springs that push more than 10,000 gallons of water a minute through the rocks below and up to the surface. Additionally, the water keeps a constant temperature of 45 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning that even in the brutally cold winters of the Upper Peninsula the pool never freezes. Tourists can enjoy viewing the waters of Big Spring during any season of the year.

When Jesus encountered a woman at Jacob’s well, He talked to her about another source of water that would always satisfy. But He did not speak of a fountain, spring, river, or lake. He said, “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14).

Far greater than any natural spring is the refreshment we have been offered in Christ Himself. We can be satisfied, for Jesus alone, the Water of Life, can quench our thirst. Praise God, for Jesus is the source that never runs dry.

Father, it seems that I drink far too often from the
waters of the world that cannot satisfy. Forgive me,
and teach me to find in Christ the water than can
quench the thirst of my heart and draw me ever closer to You.

The only real thirst-quencher is Jesus— the living water.

Insight

Having conquered the northern kingdom of Israel, the Assyrians adopted a policy of racial assimilation. They brought in other peoples, who intermarried with the Israelites. The new race, the Samaritans, followed Judaism, although not fully (2 Kings 17:22-33). Because of this corruption (vv.20,22), the Jews despised them (Luke 9:52-54; John 4:9). A Jew traveling from Judea (in the south) to Galilee (in the north) typically avoided Samaria, which was sandwiched between the two regions. Jesus chose to go through Samaria to seek out a woman who needed Him (John 4:3-5,10-15).

The Power Of Love!!!

jesus-with-children

In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the [atoning sacrifice] for our sins.

1 John 4:10

Bible in a Year: Numbers 15-16; Mark 6:1-29

Books on leadership often appear on best-seller lists. Most of them tell how to become a powerful and effective leader. But Henri Nouwen’s book In the Name of Jesus: Reflections on Christian Leadership is written from a different perspective. The former university professor who spent many years serving in a community of developmentally disabled adults says: “The question is not: How many people take you seriously? How much are you going to accomplish? Can you show some results? But: Are you in love with Jesus? . . . In our world of loneliness and despair, there is an enormous need for men and women who know the heart of God, a heart that forgives, that cares, that reaches out and wants to heal.

” John wrote, “In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the [atoning sacrifice] for our sins” (1 John 4:9-10).

“The Christian leader of the future,” writes Nouwen, “is the one who truly knows the heart of God as it has become flesh . . . in Jesus.” In Him, we discover and experience God’s unconditional, unlimited love.

Father, please show the wonder of Your great love

through me to others today so that they might know

they need not walk through life alone. Let my heart

personally experience and display Your care.

God’s love in our heart gives us a heart for others.

Insight

John, who referred to himself as “the disciple [Jesus] loved” (John 13:23; 19:26; 20:2; 21:7),

wrote his gospel to show how God is his great love, how God gave us His Son to die for our sins, and how Jesus came to give us abundant life (3:16-18; 10:10; 17:3). This new life is to be characterized by love (13:34-35).

John wrote 1 John to show believers how to put love into action. In today’s passage, he reiterated the primacy and priority of the Christian to love.

The person who lacks love shows that he does not really know God nor is in close fellowship with Him, “for God is love” (vv.7-8). In this letter, John reminds us once again of how much God loves us (vv.9-10)

JESUS WILL SUPPLY ALL THE ANSWERS WE SEEK!!!

Jesus_with_caption.jpg

Chicago is a world-class city. It’s known for its great pizza, architecture, symphony, sports teams, and lakefront setting. I love Chicago! If you were to visit Chicago, you’d see the beautiful Chicago River winding its way through the towering skyscrapers. The river adds a calming dynamic to the noisy rush of the city. But if you lived in Chicago in the late 1800s, you wouldn’t have been happy to have this river in your town. The people were plagued by it—literally.

A poorly-designed sewage system dumped the raw sewage from the city into the river. The river in turn carried the sewage into Lake Michigan. Since the city drew its water from the lake, the pollution from the river contaminated the city’s drinking water, which resulted in deadly outbreaks of cholera, typhoid fever, and dysentery. So, in desperate need of a remedy, someone had the brilliant idea to reverse the flow of the river. If they could pull the project off, the power of the water from the deep blue lake would wash the sewage away from the city and the lake would be purified to provide safe drinking water. After great effort and expense, engineers succeeded in their plan to reverse the flow of the Chicago River. Reversing the flow of the river made Chicago a better city to live in and blessed it with the presence of a clean, beautiful river.

The river problem in Chicago reminds me that I need to be careful about where I get my drinking water. Not literal drinking water, but the water that offers to satisfy the thirst of my passions and needs. Satan shamelessly dumps his sewage into the river of our desires and then welcomes us to drink. And when we drink, the damage begins to do its work in terms of guilt, regret, shame, and brokenness. But God has a better idea! Instead of the downward cycle of taking in the contaminated pseudo-thirst-quenching offerings of our world, He offers us the water of His pure, satisfying presence and wisdom every day in limitless supply.

For too long we have lived with the water of our own desires and passions flowing the wrong way. When everything flows toward self, our own happiness, the satisfaction of lusts, and personal pleasure, we dump a lot of contaminants into our churches, families, and friendships. God paid a high price to reverse the flow when Jesus died to change the direction of our lives.

Reversing the flow begins when we open the floodgates of our hearts and surrender to the flow of God’s wisdom and will into every area of our existence. We’ll know it’s flowing the right way when the water quality of our lives matches the pure quality of the source.

And, it’s not just about us. Getting the flow right means that the massive energy and supply of God’s love for others, His selfless acts of forgiveness and mercy, His care for the needy and poor, His willingness to go the extra mile, and His willingness to surrender Himself for the good of others will flow through us and bless all who live downstream. Letting God do His work to reverse the flow of your life will give you a healthier existence and bless everyone around you with the beauty and strength of His presence flowing through you.

YOUR JOURNEY…

  • What is the primary source of satisfaction in your life? Could you honestly say that it is the flow of God’s wisdom and will into your heart and life?
  • Is there pollution muddying the waters of your life? If so, what can you do to reverse the flow to bring purity into your life?
  • Read Isaiah 43:1-28, and note all of God’s promises to His people. How has He fulfilled those promises through Jesus, and how have you personally reaped the benefits?
  • What is it about your life that brings the flow of God’s blessings to those who live “downstream” from you?
  • Read Psalm 42:1-2 and pray it back to God as an expression of your desire to have your life satisfied with the water of His presence and power.

When In Doubt – Let God Take The Wheel!!!

CrossPowerLogowVerse002.jpg

When We Take the Wheel

February 21, 2014

As the 2014 edition of Speedweeks concludes this weekend with the Daytona 500, the best drivers in the world return to the track to begin a fresh season of America’s favorite motorsport—NASCAR’s race to the chase for the Sprint Cup. For years, I was largely ambivalent about NASCAR until I spent some time in car shops in Charlotte, North Carolina, and began to understand the level of intricacy and precision necessary to succeed at speed.

The danger comes in a variety of ways on the track, but one of the most fearsome is when something mechanical breaks down and the driver is no longer in control of the car. It may be something in the steering or a blown tire that launches the car up the track and into the wall. No matter what causes it, however, an almost endless number of bad things become possible when the driver is no longer in control.

This idea, of course, forms a useful metaphor for the life of faith. As followers of Christ, we have been given the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, and He has taken up residence in our lives for a reason. Among other things, He is there to bring control to our lives that seem always on the edge of crashing. This control was in view when Paul wrote:

Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:17-18).

The word filled here is a nautical term that was used to describe the wind filling a sail in order to propel a ship forward. The parallel Paul is driving for is that, instead of the destructive control of alcohol (or anything else, including self-will) that can drive us in harmful directions, we are to yield control to the Spirit. He alone has the unique wisdom and ability to move us in directions both pleasing to the Father and helpful for us.

What is critically important here is the fact that the Sprit does all of this with our absolute best interests at heart. When He’s allowed control (i.e., to take the wheel of) our lives, He will steer us into the best and most worthwhile direction that is in perfect harmony with the Father’s plan.

But like a blown tire or broken linkage, only disaster awaits when we wrench control out of His capable hands. Far from a simple mechanical issue, our walk with Christ can go utterly sideways when we, for whatever reason, take the wheel from the Spirit and demand the prerogative to call our own shots. If we pause a moment and reflect on Genesis 3, we can see the devastating results of demanding our own way. Let’s leave the direction and destination in His care knowing we can trust the plans of the God who loved us and gave His Son on our behalf.

Taking the Initiative Against Drudgery!!!

My Utmost For His Highest

lord-supper.jpg

Taking the Initiative Against Drudgery Arise, shine . . .

—Isaiah 60:1 When it comes to taking the initiative against drudgery, we have to take the first step as though there were no God. There is no point in waiting for God to help us— He will not. But once we arise, immediately we find He is there. Whenever God gives us His inspiration, suddenly taking the initiative becomes a moral issue— a matter of obedience. Then we must act to be obedient and not continue to lie down doing nothing.

If we will arise and shine, drudgery will be divinely transformed. Drudgery is one of the finest tests to determine the genuineness of our character. Drudgery is work that is far removed from anything we think of as ideal work. It is the utterly hard, menial, tiresome, and dirty work.

And when we experience it, our spirituality is instantly tested and we will know whether or not we are spiritually genuine. Read John 13. In this chapter, we see the Incarnate God performing the greatest example of drudgery— washing fishermen’s feet.

He then says to them, “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet” (John 13:14). The inspiration of God is required if drudgery is to shine with the light of God upon it.

In some cases the way a person does a task makes that work sanctified and holy forever.

It may be a very common everyday task, but after we have seen it done, it becomes different. When the Lord does something through us, He always transforms it. Our Lord takes our human flesh and transforms it, and now every believer’s body has become “the temple of the Holy Spirit”

Delightful Deja Vu!!!

2014-02-19_0825

For those of us old enough to remember the 1980 Winter Olympics, there is one memory that rises above all the rest—the Miracle On Ice. The United States men’s hockey team was made up of college kids from across the country. The Soviet Union was a hockey machine, made up of virtual professionals who had played together for years. The visit to Lake Placid was supposed to be a coronation for the Soviets, considered far and wide to be the best team in the world. But someone forgot to tell the college kids, who unbelievably defeated the Soviets in the semi-finals before going on to capture the gold medal. It was, and continues to be, arguably, the greatest upset in sports history.

Now, flash-forward to last Saturday morning, when a new US team, now just as professional in make-up and expectations, defeated Russia in a shoot-out in the Sochi Olympic Games—in Russia. For most who remember 1980, Saturday did not carry the same weight as the Lake Placid victory, but it was nevertheless a great win for the Americans and a terrific springboard to the elimination rounds. It was also cause for remembering 1980′s victory.

Remembering is one of the great gifts that we have been given. Throughout their history, the people of Israel have remembered a past victory as well—and celebrate it every year at Passover. That of course, was the entire purpose for the Passover meal. God wanted the people, every year, to remember His rescue of them from Egypt, as Moses said:

“Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out of this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten.” (Exodus 13:3)

But remembering that great victory also points followers of Christ to celebrate the victory of rescue given to us through the cross and resurrection of Jesus. We also remember with a celebration meal, as Paul reminded us:

For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” (1 Cor. 11:23-24)

For those who know Christ, there is no greater victory than this—and it is worthy of remembrance. Not only when we celebrate the Lord’s supper, but every time we think of Christ and His sacrifice for us.

Why Cause Grief? Think Before You Critize!

Jesus_and_girl150x150

Pastors make an easy target for criticism. Every week they are on display, carefully explaining God’s Word, challenging us toward Christ like living. But sometimes we look to find things to criticize. It’s easy to overlook all the good things a pastor does and focus on our personal opinions.

Like all of us, our pastors are not perfect. So I’m not saying that we should follow them blindly and never confront error through the proper channels. But some words from the writer of Hebrews may help us find the right way of thinking about our leaders who are presenting God’s truth and modeling servant leadership. The writer says, “Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account” (13:17 NIV). Think about that. Before God, our pastor is responsible for guiding us spiritually. We should want that burden to be joyous, not grievous. The passage indicates that causing grief for the pastor “would be of no benefit” (v.17 NIV). We honor God and make things better for our church when we give honor to those He has appointed as our leaders. Our gracious Father, thank You for the person You led to our church as pastor. May we provide encouragement and support, and may You protect our pastor from error in both word and actions. Pastors who preach God’s Word need a good word from God’s people. Insight The relationship between spiritual leaders and followers can sometimes become troubled. Today’s reading reminds us that maintaining a cooperative spirit is necessary in order to benefit from those who provide spiritual direction for us. Our first response should be prayerful submission: “Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive” (Heb. 13:17). But other passages of Scripture also emphasize a heart of servant leadership in those who provide us with direction: “Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor he who is sent greater than he who sent him” (John 13:16). For both leaders and followers, an attitude of mutual submission should prevail: We are to “[submit] to one another in the fear of God” (Eph. 5:21).

15 Verses For Valentines Day

CrossWordPress001.jpg

The Bible is one of the best places to find Valentine’s Day quotes about love. Love is mentioned frequently in the Bible, and many of our modern conceptions about the meaning of love can be traced back to a Bible verse. Bible verses can be a wonderful way to show some love this Valentine’s Day. Simply choose your favorite Bible quote and write it in a Valentine’s Day card. Bible quotes for Valentine’s Day can be sent to loved ones, neighbors, friends, or your religious leaders. A simple Bible love quote will brighten anyone’s day this Valentines Day. All Bible verses are from the New International Version Bible. 1. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28) 2. “No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.” (1 John 4:12) 3. “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalms 37:4) 4. “To love Him with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” (Mark 12:33) 5. “We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19) 6. “Place me like a seal overe your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy as unyielding as the grave. It burns like a blazing fire, like a mighty flame.” (Song of Solomon 8:6) 7. Therefore be imitators of God as well-beloved children.” (Ephesians 5:1) 8. “Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and truth.” (1 John 3:18) 9. “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13) 10. “My lover is mine, and I am his.” (Song of Solomon 2:16) 11. “Dear friends, let us love one another for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” (1 John 4:7) 12. “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” (Colossians 3:14) 13. “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or clanging cymbal.” (1 Corinthians 13:1) 14. “And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.” (Romans 5:5) 15. “Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8)

Happy Valentines Day to Everyone!!!

God Bless Us All!!!

God’s Devine Love For Us!!!

I believe this to be true of everyone… I know from personal experience that one can be haunted by past deeds… My God is a loving God, how about yours!!!

Recently I read about a private investigator in the US who would knock on a door, show his badge to whoever answered, and say, “I guess we don’t have to tell you why we’re here.” Many times, the person would look stunned and say, “How did you find out?” then go on to describe an undiscovered criminal act committed long ago. Writing inSmithsonian magazine, Ron Rosenbaum described the reaction as “an opening for the primal force of conscience, the telltale heart’s internal monologue.”

We all know things about ourselves that no one else knows—failures, faults, sins—that although confessed to God and forgiven by Him may come back to accuse us again and again. John, one of Jesus’ close followers, wrote about God’s love for us and the call to follow His commands, saying: “By this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things” (1 John 3:19-20).

Our confidence toward God grows out of His love and forgiveness in Christ, not our performance in life. “We know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us” (v.24).

God, who knows everything about us, is greater than our self-condemnation.

No condemnation now I dread,
I am my Lord’s and He is mine;
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine. —Wesley

The one who receives Christ will never receive God’s condemnation.

The correlaton between Religion and Sports!!!

CrossPowerLogowVerse002.jpg

On the heels of Seattle’s stunning Super Bowl victory over Denver, and in the week leading up to 18 televised nights of the Sochi Winter Games, it seems like a good time to think about one of life’s great ironies.

In some ways religion and the games we play seem like a strange pairing. But who can deny the ever-present mix of superstition and spirituality that shows up not only in the religious section of the news, but also on the global face of sport.

As a young boy, in the early days of television, I remember watching boxer’s make the sign of the cross as they came out of their corners on the Friday night fights. During those same years, I remember a quote displayed in big letters high on the gymnasium wall of the first school I attended:   “When the One Great Scorer comes to mark against your name, he writes- not that you won or lost— but how you played the Game. ”

Many years later, time hasn’t diminished my sense of the sport gods who, at the very least, seem to show up to jinx announcers who love to keep track of an athlete’s errorless play. Grown ups still huddle to pray before a game. Victors thank heaven when they win— while losers find the perceived meaning of their lives shaken and clarified by a defeat.

Yet as easy as it might be to laugh off the foolishness of religion and sport, it would probably be wise to acknowledge the possibility that God himself has an interest in the games. Maybe the games even have a place in general revelation. Isn’t it all too obvious that all of the issues of our lives, including our reluctant, mysterious reliance upon our Creator, show up in the ecstasies of our victories and the agonies of our defeats—even on the playing field?

Could that be why the Apostle Paul was not afraid to associate spirituality with first century Greek games? (1Cor 9:24-27) Today on the threshold of the Sochi Winter Olympics, we look forward2/3/2014

Today on the threshold of the Sochi Winter Olympics, we look  to being inspired as young men and women, from every nation of the world, come together in the closest thing to peace we know. Yes, there’s the nationalism, the pursuit of gold, the effort to be first at a competitor’s loss. But somewhere in the mix there is also a reminder that there is something about life that deserves our complete and total effort. There’s a battle to be fought. Rules to be kept. Honor to be sought. And an outcome that is both within and beyond our control.

At the very least maybe this will be a time to remember that the games are a reminder that we are all being called to give our hearts to something and Someone who may one day show us that what was most important was not whether we won or lost—but how we played the game.

Just recently I learned the source of that quote. Coach Wooden of the UCLA Bruins attributes it to a 20

th century sports writer by the name of Grantland Rice— who is remembered for more than his words. According to Wikipedia, before leaving for the service in World War I, Mr. Rice entrusted his life-savings of about $75,000 to a friend. After the war, he learned that his friend had not only lost all of the money in bad investments, but that he had taken his own life in shame. Rice, reportedly felt personally responsible for putting “that much temptation” in his friend’s hands. He made monthly contributions to the man’s widow for the next 30 years.

We may never know what motivated Mr. Rice to show such honor and compassion. But his words may give us a clue… and remind us… that even the games we play can tell us a lot about life.

Only you can decide how your life is going to lived…

I chose to live by the rules of common sense and guided thru my love of the Cross upon which our Saviour died for our sins!!!
